About the Workshop
Learn the ins and outs of short-form comedy in comics! With this course, students would learn how to conceptualize, write, and make their own humor comic strips. The course would start with an introduction to short comedy structure, as well as an overview of humor and gag comics. Then, students will be shown some basic short-form panel structures (think 3-6 panels laid out on a page) that they could choose from, and they can choose which format best suits their ideas, and students would be broken up into groups to do a small group pitching workshop. Finally, students are expected to draw the comic. Students would come away with one (potentially) finished strip

About Kit Montgomery
Kit Montgomery is a Chicago-based cartoonist, fiber artist, and writer. They graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2025, where they are currently earning their Master's in Fine Arts with a focus in Comics. In their practice, Kit's comics are ridiculous, largely character-centered, with some harkening back to the era of strip cartoon gag comics, and others push absurdism to the point of surreal narratives in simultaneously insane and/or mundane worlds. They focus on the intangible and completely unrealistic. They think comics are a medium that uniquely allows for the tangibly intangible.

Kit also runs a small press, Christopher Goblin Press, where their work has been featured in a number of comics anthologies. Kit's work has also been featured in The New England Quilt Museum’s Just Wanna Copyright for Makers show, the SAIC Fall 2025 Undergraduate BFA show, and some of their self-published comics are in The Library of Congress.
