About the Workshop
Have you ever wanted to create book forms beyond the structure of paper? Or are you someone with basic sewing skills looking to refine your abilities while making your very own artists’ book? Intro to Textile Artists’ Books will introduce students to a variety of mark making and surface treatments on fabric. In the first week, students will be introduced to the basics of sewing and patternmaking, as well as given an overview of textile artists' books, and being shown work by artists like Candace Hicks, Hannah Jill Johnston, Jessica So Ren Tang, and Gareth Brookes. Each week, a new technique, like embroidery, cyanotyping, and iron-on transfers, will be taught, then students will have time to develop and work on an artist book to finish by the final class.

About Kit Montgomery
Kit Montgomery is a Chicago-based cartoonist, fiber artist, and writer. They graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2025, where they are currently earning their Master's in Fine Arts with a focus in Comics. In their practice, Kit's comics are ridiculous, largely character-centered, with some harkening back to the era of strip cartoon gag comics, and others push absurdism to the point of surreal narratives in simultaneously insane and/or mundane worlds. They focus on the intangible and completely unrealistic. They think comics are a medium that uniquely allows for the tangibly intangible.

Kit also runs a small press, Christopher Goblin Press, where their work has been featured in a number of comics anthologies. Kit's work has also been featured in The New England Quilt Museum’s Just Wanna Copyright for Makers show, the SAIC Fall 2025 Undergraduate BFA show, and some of their self-published comics are in The Library of Congress.
