Book Arts: Serious Old School Play with Melissa Jay Craig
4 day workshop: September 9 through 12, 2025
6:30pm to 9:30pm
About the Workshop
Artists’ books - What are they? Can I make them? Do I need to know how to print? Where do I even start? Or, I make artists’ books but I’m in a slump, how do I work my way out?
For many years, Melissa Jay Craig taught a 16 week artists’ books class for graduate students who came from varied backgrounds and levels of experience with different art making practices, from zero to BFAs. The Artists’ Books classes were designed to challenge everyone on an equal basis, becoming safe spaces to explore, take risks, fail, and recover, while helping each person to discover or hone their voice.
This fun and challenging course is based on the exercises which were assigned during the first few sessions of that class. We’ll also cover a couple of basic book structures and page layouts, look at samples, and focus our feedback sessions on what was intended and how it is perceived.
About Melissa Jay Craig
Melissa Jay Craig’s handmade paper book works, sculptures and installation works are exhibited internationally, and are included in museum collections, artists’ book collections, and rare book libraries. Melissa has been awarded numerous grants and residencies, including several residencies at the Ragdale Foundation, Vermont Studio Center, Catwalk, Jentel, I-Park, and Women’s Studio Workshop. She was recently the 2014 Prairie Fellow at the Ragdale Foundation.
