Paper Engineering for Narrative Work with Hannah Batsel

$100.00

Saturday, August 23rd, 2025
1pm to 3pm

About the Workshop
From elaborate pop-ups to simple size or formatting changes, the way that paper moves makes a big difference in how books are read. This class introduces students to the building blocks of paper engineering: pop-up shapes, pull tabs, pockets, and more. Students will learn how paper engineering can serve as "animated illustrations" for narratives, in the simplest of greetings cards or the most complicated of artist books.

About Hannah Batsel
Hannah Batsel, is a book artist, writer, and illustrator based in Chicago, IL. Originally from Marietta, GA, Batsel received her BFA in Printmaking and Book Arts from the University of Georgia in 2011 and her MFA in the same from Columbia College Chicago in 2016. Batsel’s handmade artist book work can be found in library and museum collections around the country, and her mass-market picture book, A is for Another Rabbit, can be found wherever books are sold. Batsel lives with her friends and partner in a spooky old house filled with books, taxidermy, and hundreds of houseplants.
